Instagram account suspended or disabled: what to do in each case
Disabled, suspended, action-blocked or hacked. How to tell which case is yours, how to appeal in the app within the deadline and what never to do to get the account back.
"Instagram blocked my account" can mean four different things: disabled, suspended, action-blocked or hacked. Each has its own path. The first step is to read the message the app shows carefully, because it tells you which case it is and how long you have to act.
1. Account disabled or suspended
What it looks like: when you log in, the app says the account was disabled or suspended for not following the guidelines, and offers the option to disagree.
What to do:
- Tap the option to disagree with the decision, inside the notice itself.
- Follow the verification steps the app asks for. It may ask for a code by email or phone, or a video selfie to confirm the account is yours.
- If there's a field to explain, be direct: the account is yours and, if that's the case, you didn't break the rules.
- Respect the deadline the notice shows. It's often 180 days; after that, the account may be permanently disabled.
Appealing the same decision more than once doesn't speed it up; wait for the reply.
2. Action block ("Try again later")
What it looks like: the account opens, but can't follow, like, comment or post for a while.
Why it happens: too many actions in a short time (mass follow and unfollow, commenting in a row), or an automation app using the account.
What to do:
- Stop the action that triggered the block and wait: it usually clears in hours or days.
- Remove access for third-party apps in the connected apps and websites settings, especially ones that asked for your password.
- Get back to a normal pace gradually.
3. No reach ("blocked for no reason")
What it looks like: the account works, but videos stop being shown.
That's not a block. Open Account Status and check whether the account is eligible to be recommended. The step by step is in shadowban: how to know, how long it lasts and how to fix it.
4. Hacked account
What it looks like: your password stops working, the email or phone was changed, or posts you didn't make appear.
What to do:
- Look in your email for Instagram's message about the email change: it usually has a link to undo it.
- On the login screen, use the help option to log in and follow the hacked account flow, which asks you to confirm your identity.
- Once you're back in, change the password, turn on two-factor authentication and review connected apps.
What never to do
- Pay for "account recovery". Profiles and sites that promise to recover an account for money are usually scams. Recovery happens through the app itself and is free.
- Give your password to someone to "fix it". That's how accounts get hacked.
- Create several new accounts on the same device right after. It repeats the pattern that may have caused the block.
So it doesn't happen again
The most common causes for people who run accounts: automation apps with your password, a pace that's too fast, and the same file posted on several accounts. See how to avoid blocks when posting to several accounts and, if several went down together, several Instagram accounts going down at once.
On DevX Viral, posting goes through Meta's official API, without your password, each account gets a different version of the video, and account health warns you when an account starts delivering less.
Frequently asked questions
What do I do if my Instagram account was suspended for no reason? Read the app's notice to see whether it's a suspension, a disable or an action block, and use the option to disagree inside the notice. The appeal is free and done in the app.
How long do I have to appeal a suspended Instagram account? The notice shows the deadline, often 180 days. Appeal within it, because after that the account may be permanently disabled.
How do I get back a suspended Instagram account? Through the notice itself, with the option to disagree, following the verification the app asks for. Never pay for "recovery".
