Multiple Instagram accounts banned at once: why it happens and how to avoid it

Suspended, disabled or with no reach, all at once? What links your accounts in Instagram's eyes and how to run several without losing them all.

When several Instagram accounts go down at the same time, it's almost always because Instagram saw they belong to the same operation and do the same thing. One flagged account takes the others with it when everything in them points to the same place: the same device, the same video file, the same behavior in the same minute.

Having multiple accounts isn't against the rules. Instagram lets you have more than one and switch between them in the app. The problem is what they have in common.

Instagram cross-checks signals. None alone takes an account down, but together they draw a network:

  • The same device and the same internet connection. Dozens of accounts on one phone, or one IP, logging in and out all day.
  • The same sign-up details. The same email, phone, payment method, the accounts together in the same Accounts Center.
  • The same video file. The strongest signal and the most ignored: posting the identical file on several accounts. The platform doesn't compare what a video means, it compares the file's signature.
  • The same behavior at the same time. Every account posting in the same minute, following the same people, with the same caption.
  • Third-party automation. Apps that log in with your password and operate the account imitating a person. The biggest cause of bans in waves.

Meta's own rules say it may also act on accounts associated with an account that broke the guidelines. In practice: if one goes down and the others are copies of it, they're all at risk.

The three kinds of "down" (and how to tell yours)

Suspended or disabled. The account won't open, or opens with a notice that it was disabled. Instagram gives a deadline to appeal.

Action block. The account opens but can't post, follow or comment for a while. It usually comes from sped-up behavior (many actions in little time).

No reach. The account works, but videos stop being shown to non-followers. Open Settings > Account Status and check whether it's eligible to be recommended. To tell a real drop from a slow week, see how to know if it's a shadowban.

How to run several accounts without losing them all

1. A different file per account. It's the measure that protects the most, because it removes the strongest signal. Each account gets a slightly different version of the video: another cut, color, speed, imperceptible to viewers.

2. Post through the official API. Posting through an app approved by Meta, without handing over your password, removes the third-party automation signal. That's the difference between the official API and automation apps.

3. Spread the times. Ten accounts posting in the same minute look like a bot. A few minutes apart fixes it.

4. Grow in waves. A new account posting ten times on day one is the pattern the platform treats as abuse. Start slow and ramp up.

5. Don't automate follows and likes. Getting followers on autopilot is the fastest way to turn one account into an anchor that drags the others down.

6. Track each account's health. An account that starts delivering less is the first sign. Finding out the same day lets you pause, change the content and not drag the others down. On DevX Viral, account health warns you when an account delivers well below its own average.

My accounts went down. Now what?

  • Appeal in the app, on each account, within the deadline Instagram gives. Be direct: the account is yours and, if that's the case, it didn't break the rules.
  • Don't create new accounts on the same device right away. It repeats the pattern that led to the ban.
  • Find the link before coming back. If they all posted the same file through the same app, fixing that comes before reopening anything.
  • Separate what's left. The accounts that survived are the ones that most need their own file and their own pace from now on.

Frequently asked questions

Is it bad to have multiple Instagram accounts? No. Instagram allows multiple accounts and lets you switch between them in the app. What leads to bans is what the accounts have in common: the same file, the same behavior, third-party automation.

Why did all my accounts get banned together? Because Instagram recognized them as part of the same operation, usually through device, sign-up details or identical content, and acted on all of them after one was flagged.

Can using the same email on several accounts get them banned? The email alone won't take anyone down, but it's one more link. Combined with identical files and posting in the same minute, it helps tie the accounts together.
