How to make clips from Twitch and YouTube streams

Download the stream, find the best moments without watching it all, cut vertical clips with captions and post them to Reels, TikTok and Shorts.

Making clips from streams means taking the stream recording, finding the moments that work on their own and turning each into a short vertical video with captions. The heavy work isn't cutting: it's finding the moments in a three-hour stream. Here's the step by step, from file to post.

1. Get the stream recording

The route depends on the platform, and on whose stream it is.

If it's your stream:

  • YouTube. The stream stays saved on the channel, and in YouTube Studio you download it from the video's options menu.
  • Twitch. Turn on "Store past broadcasts" in your channel settings. VODs stay in the creator dashboard, where you can download them (they expire after some days, so download early).
  • Instagram. When the live ends, the app offers to save the video to your phone.

If it's someone else's stream: you need permission to clip it. Many streamers and podcasts allow clips and sometimes send the file; others run programs that pay per view for clips. Without permission, the clip can be taken down for copyright. More in how to start a clipping page.

2. Find the moments without watching everything

  • Chat. Spikes in messages mark what excited the live audience.
  • Timestamped comments. On saved streams, viewers often note the best moments.
  • Markers. On Twitch, the streamer (or a moderator) can mark moments during the stream. Agree on that with whoever you clip.
  • AI. Auto clips read the whole speech and deliver the segments most likely to hold attention.

3. Cut the segment before clipping

A three-hour stream is heavy for any tool. First cut the part you need (ten minutes around the moment), and work on that. The free video trimmer does it in your browser, without uploading the file anywhere.

4. Make the vertical clip, with captions

Each clip should have:

  1. A start at the peak. The strong line first; context, if needed, after.
  2. 30 to 90 seconds, with a complete idea.
  3. 9:16 format, with the speaker's face centered. Change aspect ratio converts to vertical.
  4. Burned-in captions, because most people watch on mute. The free subtitle generator transcribes the speech into an .srt.
  5. A title on screen saying what the clip is about.

Or let AI do the grunt work

With DevX Viral auto clips, you upload the whole stream (up to 90 minutes) and get up to 9 vertical clips of 15 to 60 seconds with captions, each with a score, a hook and a title, already as editor projects to adjust before posting. It works with speech in Portuguese, English, Spanish, German, French and Italian. Non-subscribers get 10 minutes of clips to try; plans include 60, 200 or 600 minutes a month.

5. Post on all three networks

The same vertical clip works on Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts. Two things make a difference:

  • No other app's watermark. Export the clip clean and post the original file to each network.
  • Pace. One to three clips a day on each network. See how many reels to post a day.

If you run more than one clipping page, each should get its own version of the video, and multi-page posting schedules everything at once.
