The phone farm: what running 20 Instagram accounts on devices really costs

Devices, SIM cards, power and your time. The full cost of keeping a phone farm, and the point where it stops making sense.

Anyone running many Instagram accounts almost always starts the same way: one device per account, one SIM per device, all on a table. It works. The question nobody asks is how much that costs per month once the farm is already built.

We did the maths with Brazilian market prices, for a 20-account operation. The figures below are in reais (R$) because that is where they were measured; the shape of the calculation travels, the numbers should be re-checked for your market. It comes out higher than it looks, and the most expensive item is not the one you expect.

The cost everyone remembers: the devices

A used device that can handle the Instagram app and screen recording runs between R$ 400 and R$ 800. For 20 accounts, with a margin for breakage:

22 devices × R$ 600 = R$ 13,200

That is capital, not a subscription, but it depreciates fast. An operation device stays plugged in, charges and discharges several times a day, and the battery goes before the rest. Call it a three-year life, being optimistic:

R$ 13,200 ÷ 36 months = R$ 367/month in depreciation

The cost everyone forgets: the SIM cards

This is the one that hurts most and shows up least in the calculations floating around.

Each account needs a number, and numbers are not free. A minimum prepaid plan with the mandatory top-up to keep the line active runs around R$ 20 to R$ 30 a month.

20 lines × R$ 25 = R$ 500/month

Five hundred a month, every month, before publishing a single video. And a line without a top-up gets cancelled, the number goes back to the carrier's pool, and recovering the account that depended on that number becomes a serious problem.

Power, internet and space

Twenty devices running all day, plus a router, plus a UPS if you take it seriously:

power ~R$ 60/month
dedicated internet ~R$ 150/month

Physical space I leave out because almost everyone uses a corner of the house, but if you rent an office, add it.

The biggest cost of all: your time

Here is the part spreadsheets ignore and that decides the maths.

Publishing the same reel to 20 accounts by hand means: unlock the device, open the app, upload the file, paste the caption, publish, check. Four minutes per account is a generous estimate for someone with practice.

20 accounts × 4 min = 80 min per publication
3 publications/week = 4 hours/week
                         = 17 hours/month

Seventeen hours. If you value your hour at R$ 50, that is R$ 850 a month. If you pay someone to do it, it is half a minimum wage on a task that produces no content at all: it is just file transport.

And that is only the publishing. It doesn't count the time keeping the devices alive, fixing a dropped login, updating apps and checking whether a post went out.

The full bill

device depreciation R$ 367
SIM cards R$ 500
power and internet R$ 210
your time (17h at R$ 50) R$ 850
                              ----------
per month R$ 1,927

Almost two thousand reais a month, with R$ 13k already spent before starting. And that assumes nothing goes wrong.

The cost that doesn't fit in the spreadsheet

Three things the farm charges you that have no line item:

A lost account is lost work. A profile with months of history and followers is not replaced by buying another device. And the farm doesn't protect you from that: what takes accounts down at scale is publishing the same file everywhere, and the farm does exactly that with more steps.

You can't measure anything. Twenty separate apps don't add up. Finding out which creative performed above each profile's normal, comparing profiles of different sizes, is unworkable by hand — and that is the information that decides what to record next week.

The operation doesn't scale without you. A farm requires physical presence at publishing time. Holidays, travel and a flu stop the whole operation.

When the farm stops making sense

The farm is reasonable in two situations: up to 3 or 4 accounts, where the time is still small; or when the profiles can't become professional accounts, because then there is no API alternative.

From 5 accounts on, the maths turns quickly. The same 20-account operation through the official API needs no device, no SIM, no presence at a set time — and the only cost is the tool.

Worth checking one thing before deciding, and it is free: your profiles need to be Business or Creator accounts, linked to a Facebook Page. If they are, the farm is replaceable. If they are not, the conversion takes a minute per account and is reversible.

On trading one thing for another

Leaving the farm doesn't solve the underlying problem, which is publishing identical content to many profiles. A tool that only automates the upload gives you the same 20 identical posts, faster.

What makes the difference is the combination: publishing through the API, and each profile receiving its own version of the video. Saving R$ 1,927 a month is the easy argument. What keeps the operation standing over the months is the second one.
