Auto captions on reels: how to add them, in the app and outside it

How to turn on Instagram's automatic captions, why they sometimes don't show and how to generate captions outside the app to burn into the video, as a free .srt.

Instagram generates automatic captions from a reel's speech, and there are two ways to add them: the app's own captions, or burning the captions into the video before you post. The app's are quick but depend on the language and app version, and don't look the same for everyone. Burned-in captions always show, on any network, and they're what most accounts use.

Why captions matter on reels

Most people watch short videos without sound, on the bus, in line, at work. Without captions, anyone who doesn't turn the sound on misses the speech and swipes. For accounts built on speech (clips, tips, recipes), captions keep people who would leave.

Option 1: Instagram's automatic captions

In the app's reel editor, look for the captions option (as a sticker or a button in the editor). Instagram transcribes the speech and puts the text on the video, and you can fix words and change the style.

When it doesn't show, it's usually because:

  • The app is out of date. Update it from the store.
  • The spoken language isn't supported by automatic captions in that version.
  • The feature hasn't reached your account yet. Instagram rolls features out gradually.

Limits: the captions stay on Instagram. If you post the same video on TikTok and Shorts, you have to redo them in each app.

Option 2: burn the captions into the video before posting

You generate the captions outside the app, put them on the video and post the finished file anywhere. That gives you control over style (color, size, position, highlighted words) and works the same on Reels, TikTok and Shorts.

To generate captions for free: the subtitle generator transcribes the speech in your browser, without uploading the video anywhere, and gives you an .srt file. It works with speech in Portuguese, English, Spanish, German, French and Italian. Bring the .srt into your editor (CapC•t and most editors accept it) and adjust the style.

To do it all in one place: in the DevX Viral video editor, automatic captions go straight onto the video, with ready-made styles and highlighted words, and the video goes right to your accounts' schedule. You can also ask your AI for captions by message.

Captions that hold viewers

  • Big and centered, away from the edges where the app's buttons sit.
  • Two lines at most at a time.
  • Highlight strong words in another color.
  • Proofread before posting. Names and slang are where transcription fails most.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add auto captions to a reel? In Instagram's reel editor, with the captions option. Or generate the captions outside the app (as .srt) and burn them into the video before posting.

Why aren't auto captions showing on my Instagram? Usually the app is out of date, the spoken language isn't supported in that version, or the feature hasn't been released to your account yet.

Can I generate auto captions for free? Yes. DevX Viral's subtitle generator transcribes the speech in your browser and gives you the .srt, no sign-up.
